Do you find yourself making New Year’s resolutions every year, that involve joining the gym and sticking to a workout routine? Let me give you my top five tips to helping you stick to your workout routine and create a new habit that last.

1) Find an activity that you enjoy doing.

If you hate going to the gym, there is no point in forcing yourself to do something you hate. Life is already filled with enough of that. Think about what type of physical activity you enjoy doing. Do you enjoy kick boxing, jiu jitsu, dancing, Zumba, hiking, running, walking, group classes, or working out at 4) home? Whatever it is, find an activity that makes you feel energized, confident and bring your joy.

2) Set a realistic goal.

We’ve all done it, we set a goal and decide to go full tilt, only to burn ourselves out, get injured, or just get too sore to continue. If you are new to having a workout routine, the best thing you can do for yourself is to ease into it. You want to challenge yourself but not to the point that you are so sore that it discourages you from continuing.

3) Complete a confidence check.

After you have set a goal rate yourself on a scale from 1-10 on how confident you are that you will accomplish that goal. Let’s say your goal is to work out 3 times a week. Ask yourself on a scale from 1-10 how confident am I that I will go to the gym all three days. If you rate yourself a 9 or 10 way to go. If you find that you are rating yourself a 6 or 7 ask yourself what would bring the rating up? It might be that 3 days doesn’t fit in your schedule, and you only can do 2. Or it might be that you need new gym attire, headphones, or you need to bring your stuff and head to the gym straight from work. Adjust your goal until it passed the confidence check

4) Schedule your work outs in advance.

Let’s face it, life gets busy and inevitably unexpected thing come up. If you don’t pre plan and think ahead for the bumps in the road, when it happens, and it will, the first thing to go will be your new habits. Do yourself a favor, pull out your phone and schedule in your work outs. You are important, which means your health is too. Show up for yourself and do mess the appointments you make for you.

5) Build your Self Efficacy.

Every time you show up for yourself and accomplish a goal, no matter how big or small, it builds self-confidence. Over time accomplishing these little goals, encourages you to keep going, keep growing and to keep challenging yourself. Confident people are more bold, more willing to take risks and are less scared to make mistakes.

Don’t let 2023 pass you by without accomplishing your goals and building new lasting habits once and for all.
